What are PRF Injections?
PRF injections can be used in a variety of different treatments due to the healing and restoration benefits of platelet-rich fibrin in your blood. The process involves our team collecting a small amount of blood from you that we’ll place in a centrifuge to slowly spin. This will allow the blood to separate into three distinct layers without separating out the white blood cells, as those also have healing benefits. The top layer is acellular plasma, the middle is platelet-rich fibrin, and the bottom layer is red blood cells.
We’ll extract the PRF layer and inject it in the facial muscles and areas surrounding your temporomandibular joints, or the two jaw joints on either side of your face that allow you to open and close your mouth. If your TMJD is a result of injuries, arthritis, or other conditions, the PRF will help heal them as well as regenerate new tissue and cells in the area.
PRF for TMJ treatment in Richardson is typically completed over the course of one to three sessions, which are spaced anywhere from two to three months apart. In some instances, more than three injections may be necessary. We’ll be sure to discuss what you can expect from the process at your consultation.
Who is a Good Candidate for PRF Injections for TMJ Treatment?
We want our patients to find relief from their jaw disorder, and for those who experience TMJD due to past injuries or other chronic conditions, an occlusal splint or adjustments may not be able to offer a long-term solution. We typically recommend PRF injections for those who:
- Are diagnosed with TMJD.
- Can’t find relief from their symptoms with other treatment methods.
- Have allergies that could make BOTOX injections for TMJD potentially unsafe.
- Don’t have bleeding disorders or a history of cancer.
- Have platelet-rich blood.
What are the Benefits of PRF Injections for TMJ Treatment?
PRF injections offer a wide range of benefits, including:
- A minimally invasive treatment.
- Relatively painless procedure.
- See significant improvements after just a few sessions.
- Eliminate the need for more extensive procedures, like surgeries.
